Why this size, specifically
The size with the most published data and the widest spread: £3,500 at one end, £10,000 at the other, for the same nominal job. It is also where MyBuilder contradicts itself — its headline rate of £40 to £70 per m² would put 100m² at £4,000 to £7,000, but its own worked answer for 100m² is £6,000 to £10,000.
The cheapest rate per m², and the biggest total
Every guide that tiers by size agrees the per-m² rate falls: Checkatrade drops labour from £70 per m² at 20m² to £30 per m² at 100m², and HomeHow drops the all-in rate from £50–£65 to £35–£40. A large drive is the best value per m² you can buy and still the largest cheque.
Groundwork is where five-figure quotes come from
At 100m², excavation and a new sub-base together run £2,500 to £5,000 on the published rates. That single line is most of the gap between the bottom and top of the range — before anyone argues about aggregate.
Drainage is more likely to be required
HomeHow lists a large driveway, or covering a previously permeable area, among the triggers for a council requiring a soakaway or other SuDS feature. At 100m² that is a live question rather than a theoretical one, and a soakaway is £660 to £1,200 on top.
Three to five days on site
MyJobQuote puts 90m² at three to five days and £1,600 to £2,600 of labour. Plan for a week of no parking, and for the surface being off limits to vehicles for 72 hours after that.
